GTA 6's 'Physical' Edition Is a Code in a Box — and Fans Aren't Happy

ConfirmedPush Square1 min read

The biggest game of the decade will not ship on a disc. GTA 6's boxed "physical" edition contains a download code — confirmed as preorder listings went live this week.

The reaction was immediate. Game-preservation advocates called it a landmark moment in the wrong direction, and at least two independent retailers — Video Game Plus and Loot Box Gaming — publicly refused to stock the game over it.

What's confirmed vs. what isn't

Confirmed: the box contains a code, no disc, for both editions. Digital preload starts November 12; boxed codes are purchasable from the same date.

Not confirmed: a disc version arriving later. Rockstar has hinted the door isn't closed, and a December disc release is circulating as rumor — we label it exactly that. If a disc edition gets announced, you'll see it here with a Confirmed badge.

Our take

If you buy boxed games for shelf value, nothing changes. If you buy them to own an installable artifact or for offline resale value, the GTA 6 box does not give you that — know before you preorder.
