GTA 6 Editions & Preorder Guide: Standard vs Ultimate

Preorders for GTA 6 opened on June 25, 2026, and there are exactly two editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. The $399.99 Vice City Collection that Rockstar announced on September 24 is not a third one. It's a merchandise box, and the game isn't in it.
Below: what each edition contains, which one we'd pick, box or download, the $20 upgrade and the PS5 region lock. Store buttons are in the where-to-buy shelf below.
The two editions
Standard Edition ($79.99 · €79.99 · £69.99):

Ultimate Edition ($99.99 · €99.99 · £89.99) adds the Ultimate Edition Upgrade. Rockstar Support lists 16 items in it, named here as Rockstar writes them:

Five of those are places (what each one is): the two mod shops, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305 and Electric Fang. The PlayStation Store's Ultimate Edition page and Rockstar's Ultimate Edition page say each is "only open for business with the Ultimate Edition". The Buggy's garage is the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, and the Classic Car Collection is a commission from the collector and fixer Wyman to restore abandoned classic and project cars. Rockstar doesn't say how many cars that covers; every vehicle Rockstar has named is on its own page. The Vintage Vice City Pack is identical in both editions, and the FAQ at the bottom lists what's in it.
One difference shapes the rest of this page: only the Standard Edition is sold as a boxed copy. Ultimate is digital, or reachable from a box through an upgrade.
Which should you buy?
Rockstar's own store listing adds one wrinkle: the Ultimate extras surface across the story's chapters rather than landing in your garage on day one. The Ultimate Edition is extras: vehicles, weapons, places and cosmetics, plus a raid on the PTT Youngin$ compound and the car-restoration commission. Rockstar hasn't said any of it is needed to finish the story. If $20 matters, the Standard Edition plus the preorder bonus still gets you the whole game. If you know you'll live in this game for years (be honest), the Ultimate extras are the kind you'd otherwise wish you had on day one.
Early buyers have overwhelmingly picked the higher tier: Sensor Tower estimates 89% of preorders so far are Ultimate Edition. That says more about who preorders four months out than about which edition is right for you, and the analyst behind the number expects the split to even out by launch.
You also don't have to decide now. At list price, Standard plus the upgrade costs exactly what Ultimate does.

Boxed or digital?
The boxed "physical" edition contains a download code, not a disc. Rockstar's support page is blunt: "A disc will not be included in the box." That caused a real backlash when it emerged in late June: at least two independent retailers, Video Game Plus and Loot Box Gaming, refused to stock the game over it, and a later disc release has been rumored but is not confirmed. Once redeemed, the box installs exactly like the digital version and needs the same free space.
So the choice comes down to price, timing and a couple of extras.
Pick the box if:
- You want the lowest price for Standard. Retailers set their own box prices and can undercut the $79.99 list price. Around Gamescom in late August 2026, GamesWirtschaft reported Amazon.de selling the box for €63.20. That was a snapshot, not a price we can promise today.
- You play on Xbox. Rockstar says Xbox "Codes purchased are not region-locked", so a box from another country's retailer carries less risk than on PS5.
- You don't mind a short wait for preload. Rockstar: "Codes that are redeemed before launch will begin pre-loading on November 12." Boxes only start shipping on November 12, so your preload starts when the box arrives and you redeem it.
Pick digital if:
- You want the Ultimate Edition in one step. It isn't sold boxed.
- You want the free month of GTA+. Rockstar's support page ties it to digital pre-orders only, and the box doesn't include it. On PS5, Sony's terms now say a digital purchase on the PlayStation Store through 19 November counts too, with the month claimable until 31 March 2027: the full terms.
- You want the download on the dot. A digital preorder starts preloading at local midnight on November 12 with nothing to redeem or wait for.
- You're on PS5 and not sure your retailer sells codes for your account's region. See the region lock section.
Both routes get the Vintage Vice City Pack. Rockstar says it "comes with all pre-orders and purchases before Nov 20", boxes included.

Upgrading from Standard to Ultimate
Rockstar's support page: "A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available, but physical Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade … after their Standard Edition code has been used."
The order matters: redeem the code from the box first, then buy the upgrade in your console's store.
- Xbox: the Xbox Store lists "Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade" at $20.00, €20.00 in Germany and £20.00 in the UK, checked on 28 September 2026.
- PS5: the PlayStation Store has an "Ultimate Edition Upgrade" product, but it shows no public price until you own the game. We couldn't read a PS5 price, so we aren't printing one.
On Xbox, $79.99 plus $20.00 is $99.99, exactly what Ultimate costs outright, and euro and pound prices add up the same way. A discounted box makes the upgrade route cheaper: at the €63.20 GamesWirtschaft reported in August, box plus upgrade would have come to €83.20.
Region lock on PS5 codes
This is the trap for anyone importing a cheap box. Rockstar's support page, updated August 18, 2026: "Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account." On PS5, the code has to match your PlayStation account's region group. Rockstar's groups include:
- North America: the US and Canada
- United Kingdom: a region of its own
- Rest of EMEA and Asia: including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Australia, India and New Zealand
- Brazil
- LATAM
- Japan: codes expire 170 days after November 19
- Korea
Retail listings say the same thing. Amazon.com's PS5 box listing states: "Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada." On Xbox, none of this applies. Rockstar: "Codes purchased are not region-locked."
What that means in practice:
- Buy the box for your own account's region. Where you live doesn't matter; where your PlayStation account is registered does.
- The UK and the EU don't mix. A UK account can't use a German box code, and a German account can't use a UK one.
- Ireland is in the EU group, not the UK one. An Irish account needs a "Rest of EMEA and Asia" code.
- Digital skips the question. A PlayStation Store purchase is already made in your account's region.

The $399.99 collector's box has no game
The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, announced on September 24, 2026, costs $399.99 on the Rockstar Store. It's eleven pieces of merchandise, from a Macca the Gator figure to Oakley sunglasses, with no game, no disc and no download code. Box plus Standard comes to $479.98 before shipping and tax. Key dates
- June 25, 2026: preorders opened

FAQ
Is there a disc in the box?
No. The boxed Standard Edition holds a download code, and there is no boxed Ultimate Edition.
Can I upgrade to Ultimate later?
Yes, once your Standard code is redeemed. It's $20.00 on the Xbox Store; the PlayStation Store shows no price until you own the game.
Will a US box work on my German PS5 account?
No. Amazon.com's code only works on accounts registered in the US or Canada, and Germany is in the "Rest of EMEA and Asia" group. On Xbox, codes are not region-locked.
Do I need PS Plus or Game Pass?
Not to play it. GTA VI launches as "a single-player experience", and no subscription is listed as a requirement at launch. Rockstar hasn't announced an online mode for launch; here's what the store listing does and doesn't prove.
What's in the Vintage Vice City Pack?
A '55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, exclusive outfits and hairstyles, and a weapon pattern. Every order before November 20 gets it, boxed or digital.
Should I wait for reviews before preordering?
There are no GTA 6 reviews yet and no announced embargo, so any score you see today is not real. The Vintage Vice City Pack deadline is November 20 either way. Where GTA 6 reviews stand.
