GTA 6 Missions: What Is Confirmed About the Story
Edited by Arthur HofUpdated: Last verified:
Rockstar has not published a list of GTA 6 missions. No mission names, no count, no chapter titles. We read rockstargames.com/VI on 27 October 2026 and found none of them. What exists is a thin layer of structure that Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson and Rockstar's own store copy have put on record. This page separates that layer from guesses, and it will grow as real facts arrive.
The story runs in chapters
Rockstar's sales copy for the Ultimate Edition says its bonus items are "available to Jason and Lucia across their story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter". We re-read that sentence on the PlayStation Store listing on 27 October. Nelson said the same thing in a Famitsu interview: the story advances chapter by chapter, and your safehouse changes with that progress. Our write-up of the chapter wording goes through what the sentence does and does not establish.
What nobody has said: how many chapters there are, whether the game shows you chapter titles, whether there is an epilogue, or whether a chapter closes parts of the map behind you. Any site that prints a chapter list is guessing.
Some missions let you switch, others do not
According to the Famitsu interview, switching between Jason and Lucia depends on story progress. We read the Japanese text on 27 October; the following is our paraphrase, not a quote:
- Some missions let you swap freely.
- Some lock you to one character to keep a single point of view. Nelson says an early high-rise escape was changed from free switching to a fixed character, because Jason is the ex-special-forces one.
- Some missions force the swap. In a bank-robbery chase, you start as Jason shooting from Lucia's car, then take over as Lucia driving while Jason and Raul shoot.
- Others alternate control between the two, such as the ambush at the end of the trailer.
Robberies can be played solo or with the other lead, both as fixed missions and in free mode. Switching outside missions is covered in our gameplay systems guide.
Missions alone will not fund the story
Also from Famitsu, as our paraphrase: finishing missions does not earn enough money to advance the story, so you have to earn in the open world too. Nelson says missions and open-world activity were somewhat disconnected in earlier games, that Red Dead Redemption 2 moved them closer, and that this game integrates them fully. Treat the exact meaning of "advance the story" as open. It could mean mandatory purchases, safehouse upgrades or something else, and Rockstar has not said which.
Reported: missions are meant to be less rigid
This part is Reported. Dexerto, citing an IGN interview we could not open ourselves, quotes Nelson on how missions can be completed: "There is an optimal route that you're told to get out, but if you don't follow it, you can still get out." Nelson also says some beats must still land to move the narrative along believably. In GTA V, as in most Rockstar games, wandering off the intended route in a story mission could fail it. Nelson's description points the other way, but we have not seen it in play, and the final game may differ. One quote about one escape sequence is not a rule for every mission.
The length figure is one person's run
Nelson has said his own playthrough took about 80 hours, including optional goals with narrative ramifications. That figure reached us through press coverage of a New York Times interview, not through a source we fetched this run. It is one person's session, not a median. Our 80-hour post has the caveats. It also tells you nothing about the number of missions.
What is not published
- A mission list, mission names or a mission count.
- The number of chapters, their titles or their length.
- Whether you can replay missions, and how failure and checkpoints work. GTA V let you replay finished missions from the pause menu. Nobody has said GTA 6 does.
- Heist structure, planning stages or crew choices.
- What the story requires you to earn, and by when.
- Which missions can be completed without killing, beyond the non-lethal suppressive fire option, which affects combat and not the story.
Anything listing mission names today comes from a leak, a guess or a mod and is not something we will repeat. Our explainer on how to spot fake GTA 6 leaks shows how to check one.
When this page updates
It updates when Rockstar publishes mission or chapter information, when sanctioned hands-on coverage lands, and on 19 November, once the game is out and we can check every line above ourselves. The confirmed overview, with the edition bonuses that arrive chapter by chapter, is in everything we know about GTA 6, and what each edition adds is in the editions guide.
