GTA 6 Server Status: Where to Check and What We Know
Edited by Arthur HofUpdated: Last verified:
GTA 6 has no server status page of its own. Rockstar has not published one, and as of 30 September 2026 nothing has been announced about launch-day capacity, maintenance windows or a queue. What you can check are the status pages of the companies that deliver the game to your console: Sony, Microsoft and Rockstar. This page lists them, says what each one can and can't tell you, and will fill in as real launch information appears.
Which status page to check for what
Three separate services can get in your way. Only one is relevant to your console.
- PlayStation. Sony runs PlayStation Service Status. It is Sony's own board for its online services. A PS5 preload, purchase or code redemption goes through the PlayStation Store, so check it first if your PS5 can't reach the Store or a download won't start.
- Xbox. Microsoft keeps its Xbox network status on Xbox Support. Check it when the Microsoft Store or your Xbox profile won't connect. That is the route an Xbox preload and its code redemption take.
- Rockstar. Rockstar Support has a Service Status page. It did not load when we tried it on 30 September, so we can't say what it lists for GTA 6. Treat it as the place to look, not as something we've verified.
One caveat for the first two: both pages load as apps in the browser. They show a live board when they work, and we haven't seen either one carry anything about GTA 6, because the game isn't out. Their state on launch day is a question for launch day.
What GTA 6 needs from the network
Both console stores describe GTA 6 as a single-player game. Sony's page lists 1 player with offline play enabled, and Microsoft's listing carries the tag Single player. That is Reported store data, not a Rockstar statement, and our GTA 6 Online guide explains why it matters.
What it does not tell you is whether the game asks for an internet connection at launch or after. Rockstar has said nothing on that. So the honest advice is narrow: the network matters for downloading the game, and we don't know yet whether it matters for playing it. We will update this page when either store or Rockstar says.
Preload is the first real test
Preload opens on 12 November at local midnight, according to Rockstar's support page. Our preload guide has the full setup for both consoles. It is also the first moment millions of people ask a store for the same download at once. We can't say how the stores will cope, and no one has published expectations. If a download is slow or stuck, the fix is usually on your side. Work through this list before you blame a server.
- Check the status pages above. If the store itself is having a problem, there is nothing to fix at home.
- Confirm your console is allowed to download. On PS5, Sony's support pages point to Stay Connected to the Internet in rest mode and the ticked checkbox next to the game content in your Game Library. On Xbox, Microsoft says an automatic install needs the console to be your home Xbox, powered on or in Sleep mode, connected to the Xbox network, with enough storage.
- Make room. A full drive stops an install. Rockstar hasn't published a download size, and our file size guide covers how much usable space each console really has.
- Start the download by hand. On Xbox, Microsoft's install page describes opening My games & apps and choosing Install all for an owned game.
- Boxed copy? Nothing downloads until the code is redeemed on your account. Our redeem code guide has the steps.
What we won't list
We are not printing error codes on this page. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have published none for GTA 6, and a code taken from an older game may mean something else here. When an official support article names a GTA 6 error, we'll add it with a link to that article.
What Rockstar hasn't said
As of 30 September 2026, none of these has been announced:
- Whether the game needs an internet connection to start.
- Whether a day-one update will be waiting at launch.
- Any maintenance window around preload or release day.
- How the stores will handle demand at unlock time.
The unlock hour differs by store region. Sony's store data lists one time per region and Xbox's listing carries local midnight, but both are Reported store data. Our release time guide has that table, and the unlock countdown shows it on your own clock.
What to do this week
Nothing on this page requires action today. If you have preordered, check that your payment method is valid, that your console's auto-download settings are on, and that you have free space. Our editions guide covers what each preorder includes. For everything that is confirmed, see everything we know about GTA 6.
