GTA 6 Controls: What Is Known About the Button Layout
Edited by Arthur HofUpdated: Last verified:
Rockstar has not published a control scheme for GTA 6. There is no official button map, no list of remappable actions and no statement on aim assist or accessibility options. We read rockstargames.com/VI on 4 October 2026 and found no control information on it. This page keeps three things apart: what the platform holders have put on record about controllers, what one creator reported from a preview, and what nobody has said yet.
What Sony lists for the DualSense
This part is on the record, though it comes from Sony, not Rockstar. Rockstar's own GTA VI page points players to PlayStation's feature page for "more on PlayStation benefits", and that page is specific. Its header block reads "Vibration function and trigger effect supported (DualSense wireless controller)". Under PS5 features it describes three controller features:
- Haptic feedback. Sony says the DualSense's vibrations "will react to your choices and simulate environmental factors" across Leonida.
- Adaptive triggers. They "provide dynamic resistance throughout the game".
- Integrated speaker. It adds sound effects from the controller itself, "often enhanced by immersive haptic feedback".
Sony does not say which actions use the triggers or what the resistance feels like. Don't read "dynamic resistance" as a statement about guns or pedals. It is marketing wording for the feature, and no hands-on account describes it.
The two Vice City-themed pads are a separate matter. Per the PlayStation Blog, the Black and White Limited Edition DualSense are cosmetic editions. They cost $84.99 in the US and launch on 19 November. Nothing in the controllers changes how the game plays, so you don't need one for the features above. Our DualSense controller post has the preorder details.
What Xbox lists
Less. Microsoft's Xbox listing declares five capabilities: single player, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox achievements, Xbox presence and Xbox cloud saves. It carries no controller feature list and no mention of vibration or trigger effects. That is a gap in what Microsoft published, not a statement that the Xbox version lacks them. Which console suits you is a bigger question than the controller, and our PS5 or Xbox guide covers it.
The L3 sprint report
The one concrete control detail in circulation is Reported, not confirmed. Italian creator Mike ShowSha, one of four guests at Rockstar's Edinburgh preview, says sprinting is a click of the left stick. According to The Shortcut, Jason or Lucia start running when you click the stick while walking, and X becomes the handbrake while driving, replacing R1.
Three cautions apply. The source is one creator's memory of a hands-off session, relayed by outlets that weren't in the room. A preview build is not a final build. And Rockstar has not said whether tap-to-sprint survives as an option. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both used it, which is why the change drew so much reaction. We covered the debate, including the stick-drift worry, in the sprint button post, and the gameplay guide keeps it in the Reported column next to the systems Rockstar has confirmed.
What nobody has published
- The full button layout on PlayStation or Xbox.
- Whether you can remap buttons, and how many actions.
- Whether the sprint input can be switched back to tapping.
- Aim assist, auto-aim and targeting options.
- Accessibility settings: subtitles sizing, colour options, hold-versus-toggle inputs.
- Which actions use adaptive triggers and how strong they feel.
- Whether a keyboard and mouse option exists anywhere. GTA 6 is console-only for now, and the PC guide tracks that question.
No one outside Rockstar has played the game, so none of these has an answer you can trust today. Be wary of "full controls revealed" videos and lists. Rockstar's own page carries none, and our piece on why viral GTA 6 leaks are fake explains how to check them.
What to do before launch
Nothing you buy changes the default layout. If you play on PlayStation, any DualSense works with the features Sony lists, and Sony also lists Remote Play support, which streams the game to another device you own. If your current pad drifts, replace it now rather than on launch day, since a stick click may matter more in this game if the L3 report holds. Preload and launch timing are in the preload guide, and the editions guide has what each edition includes.
When this page updates
It updates when Rockstar publishes a control scheme or accessibility list, when a hands-on account that Rockstar sanctions describes the layout, or when the game is out on 19 November and we can check every item above ourselves. Until then, the entry for the sprint change stays at Reported. Everything else we have verified is in everything we know about GTA 6.
