Can You Play GTA 6 Early? The New Zealand Trick, Checked

Nobody can promise you an early start on GTA 6. The "New Zealand trick", switching your Xbox to New Zealand so a midnight release reaches you first, has worked for other Xbox games. Whether it works for GTA 6 depends on an unlock model that neither Rockstar nor Microsoft has announced. On PS5 there is no setting to switch at all.

Here is how the trick worked before, what the GTA 6 store data shows today, and what a region switch can cost you.

The trick only works when a game unlocks at local midnight

New Zealand is one of the first countries to reach each new day. When a game unlocks at midnight in each store region, rather than at one moment worldwide, New Zealand gets it first. Setting your console's location to New Zealand moves your unlock to that earlier midnight.

This section is about Forza Horizon 6, not GTA 6. For Forza's launch in May, The Escapist reported that Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox app on PC used a "rolling midnight" launch, region by region, while Steam used one global release time. It walked readers through changing the console location to New Zealand, and noted that the trick only applies where unlocks happen region by region. A game with a single worldwide unlock gives the trick nothing to work with.

That is the whole mechanism. Nothing on your console is hacked and no server is fooled into an early release. You move into a store region whose midnight comes sooner.

Rockstar has announced a preload time and no unlock time

Rockstar has put one time on the record: preload opens on 12 November at local midnight, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A preload puts the files on your console and nothing more. It does not let you play, as our GTA 6 preload guide explains.

For the unlock itself, the only evidence is store data. Sony's PlayStation Store listings carry a midnight timestamp for each store region, starting with New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on 18 November. Our GTA 6 release time guide has the full table and rates it Reported, not confirmed. The unlock countdown shows that time for your own PS5 store region.

The Xbox store data also points to local midnight

Microsoft's GTA VI listing shows a release date, 19 November 2026, and no hour. The store data delivered with that page is more specific. It carries one release timestamp per market.

On 29 September we loaded the listing for all 63 countries in the PS5 unlock table. 40 returned a timestamp, and every one came out at midnight local time, matching the PS5 window for the same country to the minute. The other 23, among them Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Bolivia, returned no timestamp, so we can't speak for them. New Zealand's reads 11:00 UTC on 18 November. The US one reads 05:00 UTC on the 19th, which is midnight in New York.

Read that carefully. It is store metadata, not a statement from Rockstar or Microsoft, and it can change before launch. It also does not tell you whether the unlock will follow your console's location on the night, or something tied to where you bought the game. So the honest status is Reported: the ingredient the trick needs appears to be there on Xbox, and nobody has confirmed it will behave the way it did for Forza.

If it does, New Zealand's midnight comes 12 hours before Germany's, 13 hours before the UK's and 18 hours before the US East Coast's. That is our arithmetic on those timestamps, not a promise.

PS5 has no region to switch

PlayStation has no matching setting. Sony fixes an account's country when the account is created and does not change it afterwards, which we covered in our report on region-locked GTA 6 box codes. The only way into the New Zealand PlayStation Store is a separate account registered there. That means buying the game again from that store, on an account whose trophies and saves are not your usual ones. We don't recommend it.

Boxed copies add a second catch. A PS5 box code only redeems on an account in the region group it was sold for, so the code for your home account may not work on an account registered elsewhere. GTA 6 has no disc in either box. The box holds a download code, so a boxed copy behaves like a digital one once redeemed. It can only take part in any early unlock after the code is on your account and the preload has finished.

What an Xbox region switch can cost you

Changing your location takes a minute in Settings, under Language & location. Microsoft's own help page on changing your Store region lists the strings attached.

• The three-month rule. Microsoft lists "You changed the country or region within the last three months" as a reason a change can fail. The Escapist's Forza guide suggests switching back once the game is out in your own region. Microsoft does not say how the rule treats a quick switch and return, so plan for the chance that switching back is refused.
• Your purchases may not follow you. Microsoft recommends changing region only if you are moving for a long time, because items you get in one region might not work in another. It names Game Pass, apps, games and your account balance.
• Your balance stays behind. Money in your Microsoft account doesn't move between regions, and your first purchase in the new region prompts you to update your billing info. Buy GTA 6 in your home store first.
• The terms. The Microsoft Services Agreement says services may vary by region and that changing your account's location may mean re-acquiring material you paid for in the old one. Its code of conduct asks you not to circumvent restrictions on the availability of its services. Whether a region switch for an early unlock counts is Microsoft's call. The Escapist noted that Microsoft generally hasn't acted against players for earlier launches, and that you switch at your own discretion.

Our verdict: wait for your own midnight

The New Zealand trick is not a myth, and on current Xbox store data it may have something to work with. It is also unconfirmed, Microsoft's own rules may stop you switching back for up to three months, and it does nothing on PS5. A few hours is not worth that trade for most players.

This page changes when one of three things happens: Rockstar posts an unlock time, the Xbox listing shows an hour on the page itself, or launch night shows whether the Xbox timestamps held. When we know, the answer here becomes a plain yes or no.
