GTA 6 Preload: Date, Time and How to Preload

GTA 6 preload opens on Thursday 12 November 2026 at local midnight, one week before the 19 November launch, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is Confirmed: Rockstar's support page says "pre-load will begin at local midnight on November 12, 2026". A digital preorder starts downloading by itself if your console is set up for it. A boxed copy only preloads once you redeem the code inside.

When GTA 6 preload starts on PS5 and Xbox

Rockstar gives one date and one time for both consoles: 12 November, local midnight. It does not say whether "local" means your own time zone or the time zone of your console store's region, so treat midnight on the night of 11 to 12 November as the moment to have everything ready.

Preload is not the same switch as the unlock. The files land on your console a week early and stay locked until release day. Rockstar has announced no unlock hour. How to preload GTA 6 on PS5

A PlayStation Store preorder can download on its own, but only if the console is allowed to. Sony's support pages describe two settings:

1. Let the PS5 download in rest mode. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
2. Check auto-download for the preorder. From your games home, open Game Library and select GTA 6. A timer counts down to release. Select it, and make sure the checkbox next to the game content is ticked.

Sony's own wording: with automatic downloads set up, a preorder "will start downloading as soon as it's available". Leave the console in rest mode overnight on the 11th and the download should already be running by morning.

How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

According to Xbox Support, a Microsoft Store purchase installs automatically when four things are true: the console is your home Xbox, it is powered on or its power mode is set to Sleep, it is connected to the Xbox network, and there is enough storage for the install.

If the download doesn't start, go to My games & apps > See all > Full library > All owned games, select the game and choose Install all. You can follow progress in the queue under My games & apps.

One Xbox detail is easy to miss. Microsoft's preorder FAQ says card-paid preorders are charged around 10 days before release, which puts it around 9 November by our count. If that charge fails and a retry fails too, the preorder is cancelled. Check your payment method before then.

Boxed copies preload only after you redeem the code

The boxed edition of GTA 6 holds a download code, not a disc. Rockstar says so directly: "A disc will not be included in the box." That has a knock-on effect on preload.

• Boxes are expected at retailers from 12 November, the same day preload opens.
• Rockstar says codes "can be used as soon as they are received to support pre-load on November 12".
• Until the code is redeemed on your account, there is nothing to download. A box that arrives on the 14th starts preloading on the 14th.

Make room before 12 November

The GTA 6 download size is not published yet (as of 28 September 2026). Neither Rockstar nor the two stores show a figure, and any number you see elsewhere is an estimate. We will update this page when a store shows the size, which usually happens around preload.

What you can check now is how much free space your console really has. What happens at unlock

Once the preload has finished, the game waits in your library until it unlocks in your region. Rockstar has not said whether an update will be waiting at launch, so leave the console online on release night too.

Can I preload GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One? No. GTA 6 is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.

Does preloading let me play early? No. Preload only downloads the files. The game stays locked until it unlocks in your region.

Do I need to redeem a boxed code before 12 November? You can't preload a box before the code is on your account, and boxes are only expected from 12 November. Redeem it the moment you have it.
