GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S? How to Choose
Edited by Arthur HofUpdated: Last verified:
GTA 6 launches on the same day on both consoles, 19 November 2026, at the same list prices. Take-Two's latest earnings release lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and nothing else. So the choice is not about getting the game. It is about the console around it.
The honest problem: the difference most people want to know, how the game runs on each machine, has not been published for any of them. This page sets out what is known, who it favours, and what we will add at launch. Asking whether GTA 6 is coming to PS4, Switch or PC at all? That is our GTA 6 platforms guide.
The game, the editions and the prices are the same
Both stores sell the same two editions, Standard and Ultimate, at $79.99 and $99.99 in the US and €79.99 and €99.99 in Germany. Preload opens on 12 November on both, and both listings describe GTA 6 as a single-player game. Our editions and preorder guide has the full price table and what each edition includes.
Neither store page lists in-game content exclusive to its console, and no platform-only edition has been announced.
Performance per console has not been published
This is the gap that matters most, so here is exactly what exists.
According to Brazilian outlet Flow Games, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said during the Edinburgh press preview that the console build, at its current stage, runs at 30fps, and that a 60fps option still needs sign-off from the technical team. We covered that in GTA 6 runs at 30fps, 60fps undecided. It describes the current console build, not the finished game.
Sony's official GTA VI page tags the game PS5 Pro Enhanced. That is confirmed Pro-specific work. Sony does not say what the enhancement is, and nobody has published a frame rate or resolution for the Pro.
Microsoft's Xbox listing carries the "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" tag, with no 4K or HDR tag and no performance claim.
Series S is on every official list, so the game is planned for it. How it runs there compared with Series X has not been published by Rockstar or Microsoft. Any resolution or frame rate you see quoted for Series S today is a guess.
When the game is out, measured figures for each console go on our GTA 6 performance page. Until then, performance is not a reason to pick one side.
What each store page lists
Sony's page lists 1 player, offline play, Remote Play, and vibration and trigger effects for the DualSense. Its PS5 features section describes haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, sounds from the controller's built-in speaker, Tempest 3D Audio and fast loading from the PS5's SSD.
Microsoft's listing declares five capabilities: single player, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, achievements, presence and cloud saves.
Sony's list is longer, but it is Sony describing its own hardware, not a side-by-side comparison. Xbox publishes no equivalent controller feature list for the game.
Pick PS5 if…
- You already own one, or your friends play on PlayStation. Rockstar has never shipped crossplay, and nothing suggests GTA 6 will. The console your group owns matters more than any spec, as our crossplay guide explains.
- You want the PS5 Pro Enhanced version. Just don't buy a Pro expecting a stated frame-rate gain, because none has been announced.
- You want the controller features Sony lists, or one of the two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers. The PlayStation Blog prices them at $84.99, €84.99 or £74.99, launching on 19 November. No Xbox equivalent has been announced.
- You buy digitally, or boxed from a retailer in your own account's country. PS5 box codes only redeem on an account in the region they were sold for.
Pick Xbox Series X|S if…
- You already own one, or your friends play on Xbox. Same reason as above: plan for no crossplay.
- You want the cheaper console. The Series S is the smaller, disc-free Xbox, and it is on the official list. A missing disc drive costs you nothing here, because the GTA 6 box holds a download code on both consoles.
- You might import a boxed copy. Rockstar says Xbox codes are not region-locked, so a box from another country's retailer carries less risk than on PS5. Details are in the editions guide.
Wait if you would rather play on PC
No PC version is announced, and Take-Two's lineup table lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has brought every mainline GTA since IV to PC eventually, always after the consoles. If PC is your platform, buying a console is a bet on how long you're willing to wait. Our PC version watch tracks the evidence.
Stock may decide it for you
Console demand is already moving. After the Extended Look, UK PS5 sales rose 33% and Xbox Series X|S sales 34% in a week, according to NielsenIQ figures reported by The Game Business, and PS5 Pro stock thinned at UK retailers. We covered it in the GTA 6 console sales surge. That is one market and one week, not proof of a shortage in November, but it is a reason not to leave the purchase to launch week.
This page updates at launch
Three things would change the advice above: per-console performance data, a statement from Rockstar or Microsoft about Series S, or a crossplay announcement. We will add the measured figures when the game is out and say which console runs it better, if either does.
