How to Redeem Your GTA 6 Code on PS5 and Xbox

The boxed copy of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc, so you have to redeem that code before you can install or preload anything. On PS5 you enter it in the PlayStation Store, on the console, on the web or in the PlayStation App. On Xbox Series X|S you enter it in the Store on the console or at xbox.com/redeem. On PS5 the code must also match your account's region.
What's in the GTA 6 box
This is Confirmed on Rockstar's support page. The boxed edition contains one code for the digital download of GTA 6 plus the Vintage Vice City Pack preorder bonus. "A disc will not be included in the box."
Three more details from the same page:
- Only the Standard Edition comes in a box. There is no boxed Ultimate Edition. Once your code is redeemed, you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade in the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store.
- No GTA+ month. Rockstar lists one month of GTA+ only with digital preorders.
- Boxes are expected from 12 November, the same day preload opens. The editions guide compares box and digital in full.
How to redeem the GTA 6 code on PS5
Sign in to the PlayStation account you will play on first. Sony's help page is clear that content can't be moved between accounts after redemption.
On the PS5 console:
- Go to PlayStation Store and press the triangle button to open the menu.
- Select … (More) > Redeem Code.
- Enter the code and select Redeem.
- Select Download to start the download, or download later.
On the web: go to the PlayStation Store, select your profile at the top of the screen, choose Redeem Code and enter the code.
In the PlayStation App: select the PS Store icon, open the menu on the right, choose Redeem Code and enter the code.
Sony says every PlayStation Store voucher code has 12 digits. A 10-digit code is a discount code, which is something else.
How to redeem the GTA 6 code on Xbox Series X|S
On the console: press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Store. Press the View button to open the side menu, select Redeem, enter the code, select Next and follow the prompts.
On the web: go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the game, and enter the code.
Xbox codes are 25 characters long, in five blocks of five. The Xbox mobile app and the Xbox app for Windows can redeem codes too, under your profile's settings. As on PlayStation, Xbox Support can't move a redeemed code to another Microsoft account.
The PS5 region lock
This is the part that costs people money. Rockstar's support page, updated 18 August 2026, says PS5 codes can only be used on a PlayStation account registered in the same group of countries they were sold for. Xbox codes are not region-locked. Both points are Confirmed by Rockstar.
Rockstar's PS5 groups include North America (the US and Canada), the United Kingdom on its own, Brazil, LATAM, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Rest of Asia, and a large Rest of EMEA and Asia group that covers Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, India and New Zealand among others. Japanese codes expire 170 days after the 19 November launch.
What decides it is the region of your PlayStation account, not where you live. Sony doesn't let you change an account's region, and its help page says the region for each code is printed on the voucher. Check the box before you buy, especially from an importer. If your code doesn't work
No GTA 6 specific error messages have been published, so these are the official platform steps.
On PS5, Sony suggests checking that you typed the code correctly and that it has 12 digits, checking the PlayStation Network status, and signing out and back in. If the code says it has already been used, check your transaction history and your Game Library. If a code from another country is refused, it can't be redeemed on your account. If the code is damaged, contact the retailer when it's printed on a receipt, and otherwise contact PlayStation Support with the purchase date, the retailer and photos of both sides.
On Xbox, Microsoft's help page suggests checking the Xbox status page and your order history. A code that still doesn't work 24 hours after purchase may not have been activated at the till, so take it back to the retailer with your proof of purchase. For anything else, contact the retailer with the proof of purchase, the code and the error.
If the store accepted the code but the game is missing, Rockstar's support site also takes requests. Start with the shop you bought from, though. Microsoft's help page sends region and activation problems to the retailer first, and a box sold for the wrong PS5 region is a retailer question too.
After you redeem
Rockstar says codes redeemed before launch "will begin pre-loading on November 12". A box that arrives later starts downloading when you redeem it. Our GTA 6 preload guide covers the console settings and how much space to clear.
