How to Make Money in GTA 6: What Rockstar Confirmed
Edited by Arthur HofUpdated: Last verified:
Nobody can tell you the best way to make money in GTA 6 yet. The game is out on 19 November 2026, and until then no one outside Rockstar has played it, so no method has a tested payout. What does exist is more than most "GTA 6 money guide" pages admit: Rockstar has named five ways to earn, and said money matters more in this game than in GTA V. This page collects those statements with their sources, lists what is still unknown, and turns into a tested money guide after launch.
Money drives the story
Rockstar's own synopsis on rockstargames.com/VI starts with money. Jason and Lucia "have always known the deck is stacked against them", and the plot begins "when an easy score goes wrong". We read the page on 29 October 2026.
The character bios on Only in Leonida keep returning to it:
- Raul Bautista is "a seasoned bank robber always on the hunt for talent ready to take the risks that bring the biggest rewards". His recklessness "raises the stakes with every score". Our Raul Bautista file has the rest of his bio.
- Boobie Ike turned street money into real estate, a strip club and a recording studio. His line: "The club money pay for the studio, and the drug money pay for it all."
- Brian Heder lets Jason live rent-free at one of his properties, as long as Jason helps with "local shakedowns".
- Lucia: "The only thing that matters is who you know and what you got."
None of that is a mechanic. It tells you what the game is about, and it fits what Rockstar North's co-studio head said about how you earn.
The five ways to earn Rockstar has named
The most detailed source is Rob Nelson's interview with Famitsu, done at Rockstar North alongside a hands-off gameplay demo. We read it in the original Japanese. Asked how players earn money besides stealing cars, Nelson listed these. What follows is our paraphrase, not a quote:
- Steal cars and sell them. Nelson names it as one way to make money and gives no price.
- Rob stores. You can walk in with a gun, and a passer-by may call the police. Or you can go in through the back with a snap gun (a lock-pick tool), break the cameras and switch off the security system, then empty the till without anyone knowing. A gas station shop robbery shown in the demo exists both as a mission and as something you can do on your own, with or without Lucia.
- Raid gang hideouts. The map shows gang locations and how much cash and drugs each one holds. You can sneak in and take both.
- Sell drugs to a fence. Drugs taken from a hideout can be brought to a fence.
- Rob jewellery stores and small banks. Alone or as a pair. Nelson warns that jewellers have serious security and the police respond hard, so prepare and get out fast. Loot from a robbery can be delivered to the client who ordered it, by both of them or by Lucia alone.
Nelson gave no figures for any of the five. How the escape works, from dropping the mask to suppressive fire, is in our write-up of GTA 6's suppressive fire and in the gameplay guide.
Missions alone won't pay for the story
This is the part that changes how you play. Nelson told Famitsu that earlier GTA games kept missions and the open world somewhat apart, Red Dead Redemption 2 brought them closer, and GTA 6 joins them completely. In his words, as we translate them: missions alone don't earn enough money to advance the story. You move the story on by earning in the open world.
He did not say how much money the story asks for, at which points, or what it is spent on. The story runs in chapters, and what is known about them is on our missions page.
Cash in your pocket, money in the bank
GTA 6 has a bank account next to the cash you carry. Nelson's warning: carried cash can be lost when you are "Wasted" or "Busted", and if you cause trouble and get taken down by police or civilians, you lose all of it. His advice is to keep it somewhere safe. Your bank balance can be checked in the game, and the phone has a banking app.
Money also has places to go. Nelson says clothes come from missions or are bought in stores. The five Ultimate Edition shops are cosmetic as far as Rockstar's copy goes: no income, no ownership. Details on our businesses page.
Can you buy GTA 6 money with real money?
Nothing on record says so. Reported, not confirmed: GamesRadar writes that the Kinda Funny hosts asked Nelson about microtransactions and he said "no". At Take-Two's shareholder meeting in September, CEO Strauss Zelnick said "There's no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch", per GTA BOOM.
Rockstar's site does carry the ESRB notice "In-Game Purchases". The notice does not say what is for sale, and Rockstar has announced no cash packs. The online guide tracks what is known about an online mode. In the GTA V era, cash for real money meant GTA Online's Shark Cards. And there is no verified money cheat either: our cheats page explains why.
How GTA V did it (GTA V only)
Everything in this section is GTA V, not GTA 6. It is here because most "GTA 6 money" pages quietly copy it.
- Stock market. GTA V had two exchanges. The LCN moved with in-game events. The BAWSAQ was also moved by other players, and its prices could be followed on Rockstar's Social Club website, as GamesRadar explains. Lester's Assassination Missions were the famous trick: a hit tilts a company's stock, and you invest around it.
- Properties. After the mission "Nervous Ron", you could buy businesses from "For Sale" signs. They paid a weekly income or gave vehicle storage, per GTABase's property list.
- Heists. The big story scores let you pick an approach and hire a crew. Each crew member took a percentage of the take, so a cheap, skilled crew meant more money. The final heist paid by far the most, and the Merryweather Heist paid nothing, per Sportskeeda's heist guide.
Rockstar has said nothing about a stock market, income-paying properties or crew cuts in GTA 6. Raul's bio makes heists likely in some form, and that is still our reading, not a confirmation.
How we will test money methods after launch
From 19 November we will play the game and run each method ourselves. A method goes on this page only after our own runs, and every entry will show:
- Payout per run: the cash that actually lands, after any fence or client cut.
- Minutes per run: from starting the job to having the money, including travel and losing the police.
- Dollars per hour: payout divided by minutes, times 60. We will use the median of at least three runs, not the best one.
- Game version: the patch number shown in the game's settings.
- Platform: PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X|S.
- Patched status: live, nerfed or patched, with the date we last checked.
Until then the table stays empty on purpose:
| Method | Payout per run | Minutes | $ per hour | Version / platform | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selling stolen cars | — | — | — | — | Not tested |
| Store robbery | — | — | — | — | Not tested |
| Gang hideout raid | — | — | — | — | Not tested |
| Selling drugs to a fence | — | — | — | — | Not tested |
| Jewellery store or small bank | — | — | — | — | Not tested |
If a money glitch appears, it gets its own line, labelled as a glitch, with the version it works on and the date it stopped working.
When this page changes
It updates when Rockstar says more about the economy, and after launch, when the first tested numbers come in. The countdown shows how long is left. Everything else verified so far is in everything we know about GTA 6.
