GTA 6 Reveal Drove a Real Console Sales Spike in the UK

GTA 6 doesn't launch for another ten weeks, and it's already moving hardware. UK PS5 sales rose 33% and Xbox Series X|S sales rose 34% in the week after the Extended Look dropped on Netflix and YouTube, according to NielsenIQ data reported by The Game Business. If you've been putting off buying a console until closer to launch, this is the first hard evidence that a lot of other people aren't waiting either.
The Numbers Come From a Real Tracking Firm, Not a Press Release
NielsenIQ tracks UK retail sell-through, and its data is the same kind of figure used across the games industry to gauge actual consumer demand rather than shipment estimates. The Game Business, which first reported the numbers on September 3, compared the week following the August 27 Extended Look premiere against the week before it. PS5 sales were up a third. Xbox Series X|S sales were up by roughly the same margin. A Nintendo Switch 2 bump of about a third showed up in the same data, which is a stranger read since Switch 2 can't run GTA 6 at all, and likely just reflects a general console-buying mood rather than anything GTA-specific on that platform.
Context matters here. The Game Business also reported that UK console hardware sales through late July were down 14.4% year-on-year, with PS5 sales alone off 32% for that stretch. A one-week spike after a single trailer doesn't erase months of a soft market. It does show that a 27-minute gameplay video moved actual purchases, not just search traffic and social buzz.
The PS5 Pro Is Already Getting Hard to Find
The more concrete signal is stock, not percentages. Multiple outlets checked UK retailers directly in the days after the reveal and found PS5 Pro units thinning out fast. TheGamer reported that Sony's own UK store had only one PS5 Pro configuration still available for direct purchase, with most third-party retailers sold out entirely. Notebookcheck reported the same pattern, adding that resellers were listing PS5 Pro units on eBay for as much as $1,500, more than double the console's retail price.
That's worth knowing if you're weighing the PS5 Pro over the base PS5 for GTA 6, especially with Sony's own licensed DualSense controllers also launching alongside the game. The Extended Look itself was captured on a base PS5, not the Pro, so the performance case for upgrading isn't settled by the footage. But if Pro stock keeps draining at this rate through the rest of the year, waiting until November to decide could mean paying scalper prices or settling for the base console anyway.
Pre-Orders Spiked Even Harder Than Hardware
The console numbers didn't happen in isolation. Sensor Tower, the mobile and app-analytics firm that's been tracking GTA 6 pre-order estimates all year, logged roughly a 572% spike in pre-order activity across the two days around the Extended Look's release, compared to the prior month's daily average. RockstarINTEL put the reveal-driven bump at around 100,000 additional pre-orders. Sensor Tower's figures are modeled estimates, not sales data from Take-Two, so treat the exact percentage as directional rather than precise. Combined with the near-90% share the Ultimate Edition already commands in pre-order mix, the pattern points the same direction as the hardware numbers: the Extended Look didn't just generate views, it generated purchases.
What This Means If You're Still Deciding
None of this is a reason to panic-buy a console tonight. A one-week sales bump, even a real one backed by retail tracking, isn't proof that stock will stay tight all the way to November 19. Console makers restock, and eleven weeks is a long runway. What it does mean: if you've been assuming you can grab a PS5 or PS5 Pro whenever you feel like it before launch, that assumption is looking shakier by the week. Analyst Ronan Patrick, quoted by The Game Business, cautioned that the long-term picture is murkier than one good week suggests, given how much more expensive current-gen hardware is in real terms than it was at launch.
