US Army Battalion Offers a 4-Day Pass to Play GTA 6

ConfirmedTask & Purpose4 min read

A US Army battalion in Georgia is paying soldiers to reenlist with GTA 6. The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart is granting a four-day pass timed to the game's November 19 launch to any soldier who signs a new contract before the window closes.

The offer: reenlist by November 14, take leave launch week

A memorandum dated July 28 and signed by battalion commander Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson lays out the deal. Soldiers who sign a reenlistment contract between August 1 and November 14, 2026 are authorized a special four-day pass running November 20 to 23, the four days right after GTA 6 goes live on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Task & Purpose broke the story after the memo surfaced on the social media page U.S. Army WTF! Moments, and both Task & Purpose and Military.com say they authenticated it directly with the Army rather than taking the post at face value.

Reenlistment terms are the standard ones: soldiers can sign for anywhere between two and six additional years of service. The four-day pass is the incentive itself, not a bonus stacked on top of it. Soldiers who reenlist still qualify for whatever standard bonuses apply to their specific role, separate from the leave.

Who qualifies, and how many have taken it

The offer covers roughly 130 soldiers across the battalion's engineering, signal intelligence, human resources and medical specialties. As of the most recent reporting, 20 of them had already signed contracts to claim it, in the first few weeks of a window that runs into mid-November.

3rd Infantry Division spokesperson Lt. Col. Angel Tomko confirmed the program to CBS News, saying the goal was "a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in." Task & Purpose reports the idea came from the battalion's career counselor, aimed at younger soldiers and at kick-starting the unit's fiscal year 2027 reenlistment push, which begins in October. Command's stated hope isn't just to reward soldiers already planning to reenlist. It's to get more of the eligible 130 into a conversation with a career counselor before the window closes on November 14.

Local commanders have always had this authority, the theme is what's new

Reenlistment passes tied to local incentives aren't an Army first. Local commanders have long had authority to offer perks alongside standard bonuses, and Military.com's reporting lists what that usually looks like: extra passes, parking privileges, duty exemptions. A video-game-themed four-day pass timed to a single release date is a considerably more specific offer than the usual list, which is most of why it made national news instead of staying inside one battalion's paperwork.

This is a unit-level perk, not a Rockstar promotion

Worth being blunt about what this isn't. Rockstar and Take-Two have no involvement. This is one Army battalion using a pop-culture release date as scheduling leverage for its own retention numbers, the same way a unit might time leave around a big local event. The Hill's coverage frames it the same way CBS News does: a local retention tactic that happened to land on GTA 6's release week, not a marketing tie-in from either company.

There's also no sign yet that this scales past one battalion. Army officials told reporters the program could expand if it works, but as of this writing it is specific to the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart.

Why an Army personnel memo ends up on a GTA 6 site

None of this changes what's in the game or when it ships. November 19 stays the date, and preorders are unaffected either way. What it measures is something else: how far GTA 6's release date has traveled outside gaming press. A battalion commander built a personnel memo around it. That's a stranger data point than preorder numbers or trailer view counts, and it points at the same thing: demand for this game is showing up in decisions that have nothing to do with buying it.

If you're one of the soldiers this actually applies to, the practical question is what to do with four unplanned days off during launch week. Digital preload opens a week early, so the copy is already installed and waiting when the pass starts. Everyone else can file this under one more sign of how loud this launch has gotten, with the countdown still sitting at 87 days.
