ESRB Lists GTA 6 as Mature 17+ for PS5 and Xbox Series

The gap we flagged on 2 October has closed. The ESRB's public database now has a Grand Theft Auto VI entry, published by Rockstar Games, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. This is Confirmed: it comes from the rating board itself, on its own site, and we read it on 6 October.
What the ESRB entry says
The ESRB's rating page for Grand Theft Auto VI lists Rockstar Games as the publisher and "PlayStation 5, Xbox Series" as the platforms. Its rating summary reads:
"Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases."
That is the rating itself, not a store label and not a banner on a publisher's page. It is the first time a rating board's database, as opposed to a storefront, has carried a final decision on GTA 6.
It matches what Rockstar's page already showed
On 2 October Rockstar's own GTA VI page swapped its placeholder warning for the ESRB's Mature badge and the same seven descriptors. We covered that in Rockstar's site now lists GTA 6 as ESRB Mature 17+. At the time we searched the ESRB's ratings search and found nothing for GTA VI, and we said we would link the entry once it appeared.
It has. The descriptor list in the database is word for word the list on Rockstar's page. The Internet Archive holds a capture of the ESRB entry from the morning of 3 October, so it went live between our check on 2 October and then. The ESRB shows no publication date on the page, so we can't narrow it further. Nothing in the entry contradicts Rockstar, and nothing in it is new content: same grade, same reasons, now on the record.
"In-Game Purchases" is the plain label
The interactive element shown is "In-Game Purchases", listed for Xbox Series and PlayStation 5. It is not "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)". The ESRB's ratings guide reserves that second wording for loot boxes and other randomised paid items. So the board has not flagged random-item purchases on GTA 6.
It also says nothing about what is for sale, or whether GTA 6 has an online mode at launch. Rockstar hasn't answered that. If you wondered about Australian age checks, our debunk of the ID claim explains why they hinge on an R 18+ classification, which GTA 6 did not have when we last checked on 29 September.
The platform line is PS5 and Xbox Series
The platform field lists two consoles. Compare the ESRB's separate entry for GTA V, which lists "Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series". For GTA 6 the entry carries no PC.
Read that narrowly. The ESRB lists the platforms an application covers, and a PC version could be rated later under its own entry. It is consistent with what Rockstar and Take-Two have said and not a new PC statement, so our PC guide stands as written.
PEGI and the USK still list nothing
Only North America has a final decision on the record. We checked the other databases the same day:
| Board | Region | What its database shows for GTA VI (6 Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| ESRB | US, Canada | Entry live: M for Mature 17+ |
| PEGI | Most of Europe, UK | "No results found" |
| USK | Germany | GTA V, GTA Online and the Definitive Editions, no GTA VI |
| Australian Classification Board | Australia | Site would not load from our server today; last checked 29 Sep, no entry |
The console stores still show provisional PEGI 18 in the UK and "USK Rating Pending" in Germany, as we recorded in the age rating guide. Those are placeholders until the boards publish.
Do not read the ESRB entry as the European or German rating. Each board decides separately. GTA V received PEGI 18 and a USK 18 label, and GTA 6 is expected to land in the same place. Expected is not published, and we label it that way.
What it means for launch day
Nothing here changes the date or the price. The game launches on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you're still choosing between versions, the editions guide compares them, and the age rating guide is where we will log PEGI, the USK and Australia the day any of them publishes.
