Rockstar's Site Now Lists GTA 6 as ESRB Mature 17+

ConfirmedEdited by Rockstar Games: Grand Theft Auto VI official page (ESRB Mature badge and descriptors)4 min read

GTA 6 now carries an ESRB Mature rating on Rockstar's own website. The official GTA VI page switched from a generic warning to the ESRB's M badge, with a full list of content descriptors. That makes this Confirmed as a statement about Rockstar's page. What it doesn't make it is an entry in the ESRB's public database, and that gap matters. Details below.

What Rockstar's page says now

We fetched the page on 2 October. At the bottom it shows the ESRB Mature badge, linked to esrb.org, and this line:

"Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol."

Directly after it comes a second notice: "In-Game Purchases."

Before the change, the same spot carried Rockstar's placeholder text, "May contain content inappropriate for children. Visit esrb.org for rating information." Our store monitor logged the old wording disappearing and the new text arriving in a single check on 2 October. Rockstar did not announce it. It is a quiet edit to a page, so we report exactly what the page shows and nothing more.

The store listings flipped too

The retail listings moved with it. We re-checked both on 2 October:

  • PlayStation Store (US): the listing data now reads "ESRB Mature 17+". Our store monitor recorded it replacing "ESRB RP17", the pending label.
  • Xbox Store (US): the listing now reads "ESRB: For ages 17 and up", with the same descriptors as Rockstar's page, from Blood and Gore through Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus the "In-Game Purchases" element. Before, it said "Rating Pending, Likely Mature 17+".

Store listings describing a rating are secondary evidence, so we treat them as Reported on their own. They matter here because they agree with Rockstar's page, the primary source.

What the ESRB's own database shows

The ESRB publishes every rating in a public ratings search. Searching it for "Grand Theft Auto VI" on 2 October returned the Vice City titles and nothing for GTA VI. The same goes for PEGI's database, which still shows only GTA V.

We can't tell why. We are not claiming the rating is fake or premature. We are saying that the one place you can check it independently doesn't list it yet. When the ESRB entry appears, we will link it and compare its summary with what Rockstar shows. Until then, the safe reading is: Rockstar says Mature, the US stores say Mature, the board's search hasn't caught up.

The descriptor list matches GTA V

Those seven descriptors match the ones the ESRB attached to GTA V: blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. We lay out GTA V's ratings next to the placeholders in our age rating guide. So the new GTA 6 rating is the same grade with the same list of reasons as its predecessor. Nobody should be surprised, and that is the point: the ESRB's M means content generally suitable for ages 17 and up, per the ESRB's ratings guide.

What the "In-Game Purchases" line does and doesn't mean

The notice reads plain "In-Game Purchases", not "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)". The ESRB reserves the second label for games where players buy items without knowing what they get, like loot boxes. The first label means the game offers real-money purchases of some kind.

It does not say what is for sale. Take-Two's CEO has described the launch as a single-player release, and Rockstar has not announced any GTA Online successor, as we explain in GTA 6 online at launch. Treat the notice as a flag that some purchasable content exists. Don't treat it as a price list or a feature announcement.

Only the US has moved so far

This is a North American rating. Germany's PlayStation Store listing still carries "USK Rating Pending" in its data, and Sony's English GTA VI page still says "at the time of writing the age ratings for Grand Theft Auto VI are unconfirmed", which is stale next to its own listing. The USK, PEGI and Australia's Classification Board have not published decisions we can see. If you play in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, the DACH guide tracks the USK status. Australian players who wondered about age checks should read our debunk of the ID claim, because that law hinges on an R 18+ classification and nothing here changes it.

What it means for launch day

Nothing here moves the date. The game still launches on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the countdown shows the live time left. If you haven't picked a version yet, the editions guide compares them, and everything we know about GTA 6 keeps the full confirmed list.
