GTA 6 Extended Look: The Places Locked Out of Both Drops
Rockstar is shipping Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look twice on 27 August. Netflix gets it at 3 p.m. ET. Six hours later it goes up free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official Grand Theft Auto VI site. Two windows, three platforms, and a fair assumption that between them the whole planet is covered.
Netflix's own support pages say otherwise. The company does not operate in five territories: China, Crimea, North Korea, Russia and Syria. In four of those five, the free YouTube fallback is blocked too.
Nobody put that in a headline. It is worth 400 words.
Netflix publishes the exclusion list itself
This is not analysis or inference. Netflix maintains a public help page listing where its service is unavailable, and the entry is one line long: China, Crimea, North Korea, Russia, Syria.
The reasons differ by territory. China never launched at all. Netflix suspended Russian service in 2022 and has not returned. Syria and Crimea sit outside the service on long-standing sanctions grounds, with Crimea handled separately from Russia. North Korea has no consumer internet to speak of.
Badge on this post is confirmed, and it rests on two primary documents rather than reporting: Netflix's availability page, and Rockstar's own distribution plan for the showcase. We could not fetch the Newswire post directly, because rockstargames.com blocks automated fetchers, so the 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET routing is verified indirectly through outlets that carried the announcement text.
The free drop misses four of the same five
The standard answer to "no Netflix" has been the six-hour wait. That answer works in most of the world. It does not work here.
YouTube is under an ongoing block in China, Iran, North Korea and Turkmenistan, with intermittent ISP-level blocking in Eritrea. Overlay that on Netflix's list and the same names keep appearing. For China and North Korea, both announced routes fail. Syria is the one territory on Netflix's list where the YouTube fallback is the real fix rather than a technicality.
The overlap is coincidence rather than design. Netflix's absences are commercial and sanctions-driven; YouTube's are state censorship decisions. They just happen to land on the same map.
Russia lost the two routes eighteen months apart
Russia is the case worth spelling out, because it changed recently enough that most GTA coverage has not caught up.
Netflix went in March 2022. YouTube took longer and went in stages: heavy throttling from mid-2024 that made mobile playback close to unusable, then a full nationwide block on 12 February 2026, when Roskomnadzor pulled the domain from the state-run National Domain Name System.
One honest caveat, because the brand here is accuracy and not drama. Reporting at the time noted the NSDI removal was less absolute than the phrase "full block" suggests: foreign public resolvers stayed reachable, so changing a DNS setting undid a good deal of it. Treat Russia as heavily degraded rather than hermetically sealed. Anyone telling you precisely how well YouTube loads in Moscow next Thursday is guessing.
The third route is the one nobody mentions
Rockstar named three destinations, not two, and the third is doing more work than its billing suggests.
Alongside the YouTube upload, the Extended Look goes live on the official Grand Theft Auto VI page at rockstargames.com at 9 p.m. ET. That route depends on neither Netflix's commercial footprint nor YouTube's standing with any given regulator. If you are somewhere the first two fail, that is the one to try, and it costs nothing and needs no account.
It is not a universal fix. Rockstar's site is reported to be unreachable inside China as well, though we have found no primary confirmation of that and are not printing it as fact. Consider it the best of three imperfect options.
Everywhere else, this changes nothing
If you are reading this in North America, Europe, the UK, Japan, Australia, India, Brazil or almost anywhere else, none of the above applies to you. Both drops are open, the free one is six hours behind, and the only decision is whether you want to be early.

We are not publishing a workaround
The obvious question has an obvious tool attached, and we are going to leave it there.
The territories where both routes fail are also, without exception, the territories with the tightest legal restrictions on circumvention software. Turkmenistan treats uncertified encryption tools as a criminal matter. China licenses providers and occasionally fines individuals. Russia has not criminalised personal use but has banned advertising VPN services and, since September 2025, attached penalties to searching for material the state classes as extremist.
