GTA 6 Collector's Box Sells Out Instantly in Australia

Australia finally got a way to order the Vice City Collection today, and it lasted minutes. EB Games listed the box at 11:00am AEST on 28 September; by the time most fans refreshed the page, it was gone. We're labelling this Reported: it's Press Start's on-the-ground account of a retailer's stock, not a Rockstar statement, but it's a specialist outlet describing what it watched happen in real time.

What happened at 11am

Press Start reports EB Games opened orders for Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection at 11:00am AEST and that "the entire available stock was snapped up almost immediately." The outlet had flagged the listing was coming in an earlier post the same morning, which confirmed EB Games as the retailer but noted Australian pricing hadn't been revealed yet, and that it wasn't clear whether the box would be exclusive to EB Games or gated behind its EB World Plus membership. Both questions answered themselves once the listing went live.

This closes a gap we flagged in our report on the original US reveal: Rockstar's own Newswire post said only that details for Australia, Asia and Latin America "will follow," without naming a retailer. EB Games is that retailer, at least for this region.

The Australian price ran well past the early guess

The box costs $399.99 in the US. Before today, Press Start's own estimate for the Australian price was "$400 USD (~$570 AUD)," a straight currency conversion. The actual EB Games listing came in at $699.95 AUD, roughly $130 above that estimate and well past what exchange rate alone would explain. Local pricing, tax and import handling routinely push Australian game merchandise above a simple conversion, and this box landed near the high end of that pattern.

For context, that's about the same as Rockstar's Standard and Ultimate Editions of the actual game combined, for a box that ships with no game in it at all.

JB Hi-Fi is running a ballot, not a restock

Press Start reports that JB Hi-Fi will offer a second route in: a ballot for members of its Perks loyalty program, rather than a straight sale. Entrants are drawn for the right to buy the box, not guaranteed a unit. Neither outlet's report gives a date for when that ballot opens or closes, so if you missed the EB Games listing, watching JB Hi-Fi's own Perks page is the more reliable move than refreshing EB Games hoping for a restock.

The box itself hasn't changed

Nothing about what's inside is different for the Australian release. It's the same eleven pieces of merchandise Rockstar announced on 24 September: a Macca the Gator figure, Oakley sunglasses, a New Era snapback and the rest of the set we listed in full when the collection went official. There's still no game, disc or download code in the box anywhere it's sold.

An instant sellout, days after fans called it overpriced

The timing is what makes this notable. Fans in the US and UK spent the days after the reveal calling the box overpriced and cancelling pre-orders, with Reddit threads full of people walking back their orders over the $399.99 price and reused Vice City-era item designs. Australia's price is higher again, in a market that also pays some of the highest game prices in the world, and stock still vanished in minutes. That doesn't cancel out the backlash; it shows the complaint and the demand were happening at the same time, from what look like different groups of buyers.

What we don't know yet

Whether EB Games gets a restock, whether the JB Hi-Fi ballot favors existing pre-order customers, and whether Rockstar itself opens the box to Asia and Latin America the way it eventually did for Australia are all open. None of the coverage we found cites a statement from Rockstar or EB Games beyond the store listing itself. If EB Games restocks or JB Hi-Fi opens its ballot, we'll update this report rather than write a new one for the same box.
