GTA 6 'Collector's Edition' Leak: Why It Doesn't Add Up
Photos of a boxed "GTA 6 Collector's Edition" have been going around since September 9, posted and then quietly deleted by whoever put them up. Rockstar has never announced a Collector's Edition. It has confirmed exactly two: Standard and Ultimate, both without a disc in the box. That second fact alone is most of the reason to doubt the first.
With 67 days left before launch and preorders open since June, a Collector's Edition is exactly the kind of gap fans want filled. Rockstar built and sold real ones for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, so the expectation isn't unreasonable on its own. It just isn't what these particular photos prove.
What the leak actually claims
The images reportedly came from someone claiming to have worked packaging for a Mexican printing company, who posted them to X before pulling the account. From there they spread to Reddit and a string of gaming sites. The box described is black, bigger than a PS5 console box, branded with the GTA VI logo and "Vice City, Leonida" across the front. Inside, the claimed contents run to a welcome card, a metal keyring, a sticker sheet, a trucker cap, and a T-shirt, both printed with the Vice City design.
One detail keeps resurfacing: a circular cutout inside the box, the shape you'd expect around a game disc. The person behind the leak reportedly walked that detail back after first mentioning it, which is its own small tell. Nobody involved has produced a name, a job title that can be checked, or a second photo taken from a different angle — just the original set, already scrubbed from wherever it first went up.
The disc problem Rockstar already had once

The existing "physical" release already burned through this exact controversy. When boxed copies were confirmed to contain a download code and no disc, Push Square covered the backlash as it broke, and some retailers said they'd rather not stock a "physical" product with nothing physical playable inside it. A leak now describing a disc-shaped slot, for a publisher that just spent a summer defending the opposite decision, is claiming the one thing Rockstar has already shown it isn't doing.
Multiple outlets, same conclusion: probably fake
Notebookcheck's writeup points out the obvious gap: "all kinds of genuine-looking images can be created with ease," and without Rockstar confirming anything, there's no way to check the photos against a real product. autoevolution went further, writing that it "wouldn't be surprised to learn they are fake and generated with AI," and noting the images were mostly seen secondhand, reposted by accounts claiming exclusive access rather than traced to one verifiable source.
The leading alternative theory, floated by more than one of these outlets, is that the box is real but isn't what it's being sold as: a press or influencer kit built for reviewers, not a retail SKU. Rockstar has sent branded merchandise to media before a launch without turning any of it into a store listing.
Why fans want this one to be true
None of this is happening in a vacuum. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told CNBC back in March that GTA 6 would ship with "a big physical component," a line fans have quoted ever since as a promise of something more than a code in a box. It's the same promise that led directly to the disc backlash once the actual physical edition turned out to be digital underneath the packaging. A Collector's Edition leak lands exactly where that unresolved expectation still sits, which is precisely why it spreads faster than the evidence behind it deserves.
What actually changes if Rockstar announces one
Nothing retroactive. If a real Collector's Edition does eventually get confirmed, it won't add anything to preorders already placed. 89% of preorders are already the Ultimate tier, the highest option that currently exists, and a new SKU wouldn't upgrade an existing order or unlock extra content inside the game either way. Rockstar has never tied a physical edition to gameplay.
Until Rockstar's Newswire or a platform storefront lists one, treat any "Collector's Edition preorder" link as fake, the same advice that applied to sites selling a GTA 6 demo that doesn't exist.
