GTA 6's Free TGS Shirt Is Already Reselling for $220

A shirt Sony was handing out for free at Tokyo Game Show 2026 is already listed on eBay for $219.99. Not a rumor, not a mockup, an actual sale, from an actual Osaka reseller who has already moved two of them at that price. The item cost nothing to obtain. It required sitting through a trailer you can watch on YouTube for free. That gap between what it took to get and what people are now paying is the whole story.
A line that closed in ten minutes
The shirt was the reward for watching Sony's 300-inch Extended Look theater inside the PlayStation booth, the dedicated GTA 6 screening space with floor haptics that Sony built for TGS 2026 instead of giving Rockstar its own booth. Attendees who sat through the full 30-minute cut got a co-branded GTA 6 x PlayStation T-shirt and a "VI" sticker as part of a three-piece PlayStation set. The queue for the experience closed within ten minutes of the public days opening, according to games.gg and Dexerto. Red Bull's booth next door reportedly had to stop handing out light-up tumblers that same weekend for the same reason: too many people, not enough floor.
Tokyo Game Show 2026 ran its public days from September 19. The show's planned fifth day on September 21 was cancelled as Typhoon Dujuan approached Japan. The crowding at the PlayStation booth happened before that cancellation, on the opening public day, which tells you the demand wasn't a scheduling fluke. It was there from the first hour the doors opened.
Free shirt, $220 listing, 48 hours
By Dexerto's count, the shirts hit Mercari in Japan first, listed north of 12,000 yen (roughly $76). From there they crossed onto eBay, where the Osaka seller's $219.99 listings sold within 48 hours of the giveaway. That's close to triple the Japanese resale price, and nearly the cost of the game's Ultimate Edition, for a shirt that never had a retail price to begin with. Sony didn't sell it. It gave it away to anyone willing to watch a trailer they could already stream at home.
Merch scalping at TGS isn't new. Dexerto and games.gg both point to the same pattern from past Metal Gear Solid shirt drops at the show. What's notable here is the speed and the multiplier. A free item with a Sony-PlayStation co-brand and a GTA 6 logo turned into money in under two days, at a show still eight weeks before the game itself ships.
Part of a busier merch weekend than usual
The shirts didn't sell out in isolation. The same week, the limited double-vinyl pressing of GTA 6: The Album sold out within minutes of going on sale, and Sony's limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers moved fast enough after their September 10 preorder window that resale listings appeared almost immediately. Three separate GTA 6 products, a shirt, a vinyl box, a controller, all cleared out faster than they could be bought at face value, inside the same rough stretch of September.
None of that is Rockstar's doing directly. The shirt came from Sony's marketing budget, the vinyl from the album's label partners, the controllers from PlayStation hardware. But all three ride the same November 19 release date, and all three are being treated by a slice of the market as collectibles worth flipping months before the game is even out.
What it actually tells you
Scalped merch isn't proof of anything about the game itself. No gameplay, no features, nothing that changes what's in the box on launch day. What it does show is that demand for anything with the GTA 6 name on it, official or licensed, is high enough right now that a free convention giveaway outperforms most retail preorders as a flip. If you're weighing which edition of the game to actually preorder against chasing merchandise, the merch chaos is a signal to move early and through official channels, PlayStation Direct and Rockstar's own storefronts, not a reseller charging a 300% markup on something that cost nothing to make.
With under nine weeks left on the countdown to November 19, this is likely the first of several supply crunches, not the last. Expect the same pattern around the next controller drop, the next vinyl restock, and whatever physical bundle Rockstar or its partners announce next.
